Name: Jadranka P.
Mother tongue: Croatian
Occupation: Teacher at an orphanage
My object: distaff
My story about it:
This distaff belonged to my grandmother Božica, my mother’s mum, and my grandfather Šimun Maruna made it for her back in those days when women still wound and spun wool themselves. It may be modest in appearance, but I find it rich in meaning. I associate it with fairy tales, mythical imagery, expressing love and care for others. It also has the “work and pray” motto embedded in it, and the silence of late afternoons.
